On 1 October 2026, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (FCC 26-66) to review and update the existing Ultra-Wideband (UWB) regulations under 47 CFR Part 15, Subpart F.
The proposed changes include allowing UWB devices to be tested in their normal operating mode, revising the UWB transmitter definition and introducing a new device category for location-sensing applications.
The FCC is also considering relaxing restrictions on UWB use in toys, aircraft and ships, removing coordination requirements for imaging systems and reviewing existing emission limits.
These changes aim to support newer UWB technologies and reduce the need for individual regulatory waivers while continuing to protect other radio services from interference.
The proposals are currently open for consultation and have not yet been adopted.
